Cupping In Tarrytown

What is Cupping?

Cupping is not a new technique although it has had a recent surge in popularity as high profile athletes have been seen with the characteristic large red dots on their skin during sporting events. Cupping in our clinic is most often used to increase soft tissue mobility and speed the healing process by promoting increased blood flow to a needed region.

Cupping can be thought of as the opposite of massage – it’s a lift of the skin and surrounding structures with a suction as opposed to a pressing of skin and surrounding structures.  In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) cupping can be done with glass cups and a fast burst of flame to create the suction of air.  We do not utilize this system but instead use either a flexible silicone cup or a variable pressure pump with a solid cup to control the amount of suction which allows our therapists to personalize the technique to our patients’ specific needs.

Cupping is generally a comfortable experience and can be administered with either static cups where placement of cups is on or around areas of tension or dynamic cups where cups are slid across areas of tension.  Both can leave temporary red marks on the skin which usually resolve within 3 days; however, these marks are not uncomfortable as they do not come from an injury like a bruise.

This practice dates back over 2,000 years but has received recent attention due to its use by world-class athletes for injury relief.

In a peer-reviewed study, researchers concluded that cupping could be effective in treating the pain and disability associated with chronic neck pain and chronic low-back pain in the short term.

Cupping is generally safe for healthy people when performed by one of our trained health professionals.

Some of the side effects like bruising and soreness are possible.

Benefits of Cupping in Tarrytown

Sometimes, cupping can be described as a “tissue distraction” technique. Cupping involves moving the cups across the body to lift and separate tissue. This can help to release of structures between neural tissues, fascia and skin, ligaments, muscles, tendons, and other structures. It can relax muscles, release trigger points, increase lymphatic flow, increase local circulation, and release scar tissue adhesion. There is evidence that cupping can be used to treat fibromyalgia, chronic neck pain, and low back pain.
